Kuehne + Nagel Solar Project - MOD Defence Fulfilment Centre, Telford

Project Overview

In 2023, UK Facilities Solutions Ltd in collaboration with it’s sister company Blue Renewables partnered with global logistics provider Kuehne + Nagel to deliver a major renewable energy installation at the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Fulfilment Centre (DFC1) in Telford.

The 1.03MWp rooftop solar system represents a significant step towards decarbonising one of the UK’s most critical logistical hubs, ensuring sustainable operations while supporting the MOD’s long-term commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction.

About the Defence Fulfilment Centre

The Defence Fulfilment Centre, located at MOD Telford, is the MOD’s logistical heartbeat, distributing essential supplies and equipment to British Armed Forces personnel worldwide.

  • Vital role in supply chains – delivering everything from food and clothing to medicines and PPE.

  • Critical infrastructure – the DFC supported the national COVID-19 response by handling ventilator distribution.

  • Operational scale – as a state-of-the-art logistics hub, it is central to maintaining readiness and resilience for UK defence operations.

The Solar Solution

  • System Size: 1.03MWp rooftop solar PV

  • Annual Output: ~900MWh of clean electricity

  • Carbon Savings: ~176 tonnes per year

This large-scale installation was engineered to maximise energy generation from the extensive roof space of the DFC1 building. The system is expected to supply a significant proportion of the site’s electricity demand, reducing reliance on grid energy while cutting operational costs and emissions.

Results & Impact

  • Energy Security: Enhances resilience by producing renewable power directly on-site.

  • Cost Savings: Offsets a substantial portion of electricity demand, reducing long-term operating costs.

  • Sustainability Leadership: Demonstrates Kuehne + Nagel and the MOD’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions across critical infrastructure.

  • Carbon Impact: The system saves the equivalent of 176 tonnes of CO₂ annually – the same as removing over 80 petrol cars from the road each year.

Client Benefits

This project provides immediate operational benefits through energy cost savings while contributing to the wider sustainability goals of both Kuehne + Nagel and the Ministry of Defence. It is a landmark example of how renewable energy can be deployed at scale within high-security, mission-critical environments.
